An Oktoberfest Celebration For All

The Oktoberfest celebration is usually celebrated in places all over the world, but we all relate it to Germany and it represents a celebration of all things culturally German in origin. Many people when they left Germany and moved to other places have started up this Oktoberfest celebration to bring back some of that native fun and feel. Now a days in places where Oktoberfest is celebrated regularly it serves as an opportunity for descendents of German immigrants to take part in some cultural celebration of their ancestry. For those of non-German descent it serves as an opportunity to learn a little bit about German culture.

Whether you are just looking to learn about German culture and food or are trying to immerse yourself in some of your ancestors’ culture you can easily throw yourself a fun Oktoberfest party. Don’t worry about timing. The name does imply that the Oktoberfest is traditionally held in the month of October, but you can safely get away with having this celebration anytime during the fall.

Make it a large affair. If you can request space at the local recreation center or banquet hall so lots of people can come. Invite local artists and those involved with German cultural achievements to come and participate or even present a show at the event. Then invite all of your friends and family and go a little further by inviting the whole neighborhood to the Oktoberfest celebration.

If you are concerned you won’t have enough food tell your guests to bring their own German dishes. Make this a potluck event so you only have to provide the decorations.

Decorations can be bought in bulk and you’ll be able to find plenty that are themed after the holiday so you can use Oktoberfest themed plates, cups, napkins and tablecloths for the celebration.

German Memories- Otto von Bismarck and the Unification of German States into a German Confederation

When my discussion with Pascal turned into the unification of the German Nation and its emergence of the new European super power, how Otto von Bismarck played diplomacy and statesmanship surprised us.

Bismarck took advantage of his great skills in the field of diplomacy and led two wars which turned Prussia into the most powerful state among other states of the German Confederation and a major power in Europe. He ultimately made the German Nation an European super power by the unification of various states in to a single entity.

At the very early stage in his career, he opposed the unification of Germany, arguing that Prussia would lose its independence in the process. He accepted his appointment as one of Prussia's representatives at the Erfurt Parliament, an assembly of German states that met to discuss plans for union, but only in order to oppose that body's proposals more effectively. The Parliament, in any event, failed to bring about unification, for it lacked the support of the two most important German states, Prussia and Austria.

In 1852, Friedrich Wilhelm appointed Bismarck as Prussia's envoy to the Diet of the German Confederation in Frankfurt. His eight years in Frankfurt were marked by changes in his political opinions. No longer under the influence of his ultraconservative Prussian friends, Bismarck became less reactionary and more moderate. He became convinced that Prussia would have to ally itself with other German states in order to countervail Austria's growing influence. Thus, he grew more accepting of the notion of a united German nation.

Shortly after he served as the Prussian envoy in Frankfurt he had undertaken an ambassadorial position to Russia. While Bismarck was promoted, Helmuth von Moltke and Albrecht von Roon were appointed as the new Chief of Staff for the Prussian army and the Prussian Minister of War respectively and these three men over the next 12 years transformed the German Nation by unifying it into a powerful nation of Europe.

Before unification, the German Nation consisted of a multitude of principalities loosely bound together as members of the German Confederation. The Germanic Confederation of 39 states which was created from the previous 300 was under the heavy influence of Austria and its emperor as the president of the Confederation. Only portions of the territory of Austria and Prussia were included in the Confederation.

You Can't Get an Accent From a Book

Most of us were introduced to languages at school and I am sure the majority regret that they did not take it more seriously. I for one took French at school for 6 years and after all those years of bashing out mind numbing grammar and conjugating irregular verbs the first words which in the past parted my lips when on French soil was ‘Parlez vous Anglais?’ Most French know that us Brits have had French at schools for just as long as they have English. This is perhaps why they get ruffled when most English insist that we all speak English in both England and France. Many will sit back and blame it on the ‘curse of the English’ but I prefer to pass blame to the British educational system who place more emphasis on writing post cards and reading poems than actually dealing with the real reason for the need to know a language.

During my time living in Germany I have learnt that there is only one way to learn a language and that is to get out and fully immerse oneself into a culture which will eventually lead to an understanding of the local language.

Language journeys (Sprachreisen) are fast becoming a popular method in which to learn or improve on language skills. In the past a language journey consisted of student exchanges whereby students would swap lives for up to a year with a student from another country. This is still one of the most effective ways in which to learn a language but the face of international language travel has developed into an ever expanding industry. The ability to converse in multiple tongues is now and integral part of globalisation.

It is widely accepted that English is the most important language and as such it is the first choice for many to learn as a second language. Language journeys to England and Malta are the most popular destinations for Europeans to learn English. However, most European school leavers have a sufficiently high level of English and there is now an increased demand for learning Spanish, Italian, German and French. This in turn has given rise to a sharp increase in the amount of language schools to meet demands.

Learn German - Four Unusual Strategies

Picture Dictionaries
Picture Dictionaries are books that differ significantly from what you would expect from a regular dictionary. They are made up of different themes - such as "At the airport" or "in the supermarket". They will show many pictures - mostly things and situations that fit this specific theme and mention the words below the picture in English and German - and maybe many other languages. You might think this is just for kids. But any adult can get such a great deal of information out of a picture dictionary. It makes learning fun, visual and context sensitive. Most people learn better in a visual way. So these mostly 2-sided themes will help you tremendously because they summarize the most relevant vocabulary for a theme clustered together with pictures that are fun to look at and to browse through. I use them myself regularly and it just doesn't feel like you are learning - it's as relaxing as going through a magazine. But the amount of content you pick up this way is amazing. Think of it: It resembles much more reality than learning pairs of printed words. A word is just an abstraction of something real. So when you are learning vocables you are dealing with two abstractions tied together. However, we tend to think in pictures. Your mind has to do two things: Translate the picture in your mind to an English word, translate the English word into the German word by looking up that word pair you memorized. So when you look in picture dictionaries you get the words associated directly with pictures in your mind.

Sometimes a picture dictionary is the only way to explain a certain thing to a non-native speaker, because in many situations we cannot explain what we mean even in our own language - particularly certain types of food or special technical terminology.

Advertisements
Another unusual way to learn German - as well as any language is through advertisements. Why ads? Because ads are made by professional marketing experts for just one thing: Transport a message clearly and quickly and get in your memory and make you remember it. That's exactly what you want when you learn a language. A teacher or a textbook author does not come close to the effectiveness of the communication professionals in the agencies. So while you may not like to be bothered by ads in your own language you should take a look at them in the language you want to learn. Certain phrases will store themselves in your brain instantly remain in your memory for a long time. Most of them are short, funny and easy to remember. Anyway, it is advertisement isn't it?

Picture Associations
When you hear a word in German that does not resemble anything you know in English try to think if this word reminds you of anything funny or strange that your know. The more unusual the association the better. Consider the German word 'Kissen' which means 'pillow'. Just think of yourself kissing your girlfriend/boyfriend on a pillow. This association makes sense and is easy to memorize. The best thing: It involves emotions. Emotions are a great accelerator for memorizing and remembering things. It doesn't even have to be positive emotions. Negative feelings work as well. Anything that is not boring will make you remember the words you wanted to remember.

What You Should NOT Do
Although it might seem tempting DO NOT use music and song lyrics to learn a foreign language. Most songs contain either a form of dialect, inappropriate slang or rude language. Many songs play with language by falsifying it and twisting it around. Some use very old-fashioned and poetry-style language. So don't use it.

Don't read German newspapers. Most of them are very political and use a terminology which is extremely hard to understand. The sentences are extremely long, so usually when you get to the end you cannot remember how it started. Newspapers are clearly for the advanced language learner. So please stay away from them in the beginning.

The German Grandfather Clock Tradition

We expect a lot from our clocks. We expect them to be breathtakingly beautiful. We expect them to make a strong statement about our status in life. They should brighten our home with their elegance. Their rich chimes should fill our life with music. Above all else, though, they should be reliable and steadfast.

At some point, we’ve all heard the phrase that something works “like clockwork.” That is how dependable we expect our clocks to be. We think of them as infallible. Clocks have become a symbol of everything strong and faithful. In fact, we put our lives in their hands, trusting them to keep us on time, on track, and on schedule. What could be a better symbol of steadfast loyalty than the grandfather clock? Standing well over 6 feet tall and constructed of solid wood, they are the very picture of faithful duty.

In the world of grandfather clocks, German grandfather clocks are known to be well-made and valuable. They are among the most respected and trusted clocks of all. In fact, some of the most revered antique grandfather clocks are of German craft. Harfen-Gong grandfather clocks, for example, are German-made antiques. Many are still working today, which is further testimony to the quality of German craftsmanship. Another popular German clock was made by Berger & Wuerker in the early 1900s.

German parts are often an intricate ingredient even in clocks made in other parts of the world. In any country, German movements are synonymous with quality and reliability. The oldest existing maker of mechanical movements is the Kieninger Clock Factory, founded in Germany in 1912 by Joseph Kieninger. Today, many of the world’s best clocks, such as Howard Miller and Ridgeway, rely on the technology of German movements.

Though most grandfather clocks are not actually made in Germany today, the German technology is still the driving force behind some of the greatest and most valuable grandfather clocks on the market.
